Manufacturers of electronic products and aircraft parts often mark serial numbers on the surface of their products and use barcodes or polymer holographic labels to provide product identification and traceability to ensure product quality. However, serial numbers and barcodes are susceptible to damage, and labels can be tampered with and counterfeited.

A team led by scientist Duncan Hand from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, UK, used ultraviolet laser to engrave microstructured holograms directly on the surface of metal parts to create anti-counterfeiting hologram labels.

The kilohertz industrial laser can precisely melt the metal surface locally, thereby generating smooth optical patterns on the metal surface. By controlling the laser beam to form a specific pattern, the resulting holographic structure can be used as a security mark for high-value products and components.

"The holograms are visible to the naked eye and are very smooth and textured," said researcher Krystian Wlodarczyk. "They prevent localized damage and can be read with a low-cost, commercial laser pointer collimated beam, so the user does not need expensive technology to inspect the item. authenticity.
